Damien Hirst
Born in Bristol (United Kingdom) in 1965. Lives and works in London (United Kingdom).
Damien Hirst, a leading representative of the extraordinary British cultural rebirth in the 1980s, is one of the most popular and controversial artist on the contemporary scene. He creates glass showcases and display-cabinets that hold complete or dissected animals preserved in formaldehyde, improbable skeletons, finds from the anatomy lab, larvae of flies about to hatch in the freshly cut-off head of a cow. Through his works, Hirst shows the contrast between the modern cult of health and the inexorable decay of the body, between fragility and strength, aspirations to immortality and the shoals of death, the ambitions of scientific progress and the inevitability of the passage of time.
