Professor Xu Jianrong is a renowned art historian and educator. He is also a painter, calligrapher, and a connoisseur of painting and calligraphy. In 1984, he graduated from the graduate school at China Academy of Fine Art in Zhejiang. He studied and did research under Wang Bomin, Xie Zhiliu and Chen Peiqiu. He specializes in poetry, landscape painting as well as bird-and-flower painting. He has dedicated himself continuously in studying art history, authentication of paintings and calligraphies, and in art education work.
Besides being a professor and doctoral supervisor at Shanghai University's School of Art, he is a panel member for the literature, art and journalism program of Shanghai's Tenth Five-year Plan. He was a member of the ninth and tenth CPPCC. He is also the chief editor of the Art Volume for the encyclopedic dictionary Da Ci Hai, as well as member of Shanghai Institute of Culture and History.
